The research library of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU) is an important educational and scientific center of the university.
The library has reading rooms and home loan deparments in two buildings, providing users with 830 seats, as well as two computer classes totally with 150 personal computers with Internet access, printers, scanners and other necessary equipment.
Co-working spaces are provided for independent work of students with a focus on active learning, research and the development of the intellectual potential of the university community.
The specialized Department of Research Support and Institutional Repository operates to provide researchers with up-to-date scientific information, increase the visibility of their research works, promote the growth of author indicators (h-indices) and train university researchers, teachers and students on using scientometric platforms and databases.
Taking into account the needs of students with disabilities, the library has the Inclusive Information and Resource Room. It is equipped with personal computers, a scanner and specialized software, including voice programs that facilitate access to information for students with visual impairments.
The website of the library (https://lib.enu.kz/en) and its pages on social networks are the main tools for promoting library resources and services, as well as important channels of interaction with users. The website is adapted for people with special educational needs, providing convenient access to all its functions. The main page contains a “Single Search Window” based on the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), allowing users to find the necessary information around the clock.
The library’s book collection contains 1,5 million copies of scientific and educational literature. Users are provided with free access to 25 leading international databases, such as Springer, IEEE, Oxford University Press, JSTOR, EBSCO, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, Academic OneFile, Press Reader and others, as well as to reputable scientific journals. The total content of the electronic library system and database is 500,000 electronic publications, including 9,000 scientific full-text journals with archives.
A wide range of virtual library services includes searching, viewing and ordering literature. The library electronic catalog contains 220,000 bibliographic records of printed and electronic resources, as well as 80,000 full-text electronic documents.
In order to promote electronic resources and improve the information literacy of students and faculty of the university, webinars, seminars, trainings, consultations on working with electronic resources, preparing and formatting scientific papers, registering in subscription to scientometric databases and choosing a scientific journal for publishing articles are held on an ongoing basis.
International cooperation.
The library is home to an American Corner and Maker Space, a space offering free resources and services for learning English: courses, conversation clubs, book collections, databases, webinars, workshops, meetings with experts, and discussions of current topics.
The Maker Space also offers free courses in 3D modeling, working with 3D printers, robotics, and mastering various software products. The American Corner and Maker Space has become a popular place among ENU students and faculty. In 2024, the American Corner was visited by more than 60,000 people, for whom more than 380 events were held. Among the promotional events, the following can be noted: an educational exhibition with representatives of leading American universities and colleges, competitions, an exhibition and master classes, STEM trainings, meetings with interesting people, a hackathon, etc. Meetings with English native speakers, trainings in public speaking and spoken English are especially popular among student youth, and various courses to improve additional skills with highly qualified teachers from various fields of science have been successfully conducted.
